Figure Drawing

it took an extended period of time to pose the woman tonight, so it actually felt like a short amount of draw time. i think it turned out nice tho for what i got done. worked more with try to establishing volume this time.

i got my light box today! it's sweet and will hopefully help speed me up on a couple of projects.

Friends

i finally finished it, and gave this oil painting to our friends to celebrate the (coming) birth of their baby girl. i liked the idea of the big protector kinda of thing, so i went with this big robot trying his best to be as human a friend as possible to this little girl that he cares for and protects. little does she know that he's probably totally capable of destroying a small town, or is perhaps also built with an internal arsenal of severely destructive weaponry. here he just wants to give her a flower.

it was fun, and i learned a lot working on it. i'm also happy with the girl and the her level of refinement. she's not just blocked in, but she doesn't look photo-real or anything. i like where she's at. it was a lot of fun.

i've got another little robot painting in the works that i like quite a bit so far! i'll post as soon as i get it to a presentable stage.

Figure Drawing

another figure drawing night. it was fun. i do better when i can put my headphones on and zone out and not worry about what's goin on around me. my warmups last night were bleh at best so i was a little worried. i had sketched stuff all day at work and was concerned that i had already gotten all my good drawings out of me in the afternoon.

but it went ok. i'm feeling more confident with my figure drawing and i'm having fun with it. i'm also tryin to work on my line quality, which may seem counter-productive since i'm also trying to loosen up in my work. so, i'm probably just giving myself more problems. eh, whatever, i'm having fun.

A Sketch Just For Fun

i've been busy with a lot of different things going on...mostly house projects honestly. but casey and i watched memoirs of a geisha the other night and i really really liked it. it was great and while it was ending, i threw together this little sketch just for goofs. it was fun...no pressure. i splashed some colors on it tonight just for kicks to relax and play around.

i'd keep working on it probably if the drawing itself were better. but it was just for fun and i'm ready to move on.

i also bought a light table today. with some of my latest drawings, i've done revisions to parts and really wished i had a light table to assist in modifications. so, i got one on order and on the way.
i also have a couple little oil paintings underway. again, nothing serious. just goofin around, but i'll post them when i can.

The Varnish

not that you can tell from these scans, but a varnish is the best thing in the world. i put an extremely heavy gloss varnish on this robot and even tho it's not that great of a little painting, it makes it so much cooler. it's ridiculously shiney and makes that pink look super saturated. it's so much fun.

i also put a matte varnish on this tree. i did this quick rough-in of a cemetary from a random reference. again, just for fun and to learn a little about the medium.

lastly, i had drawing tonight. great pose, and i bombed it. i just couldn't get it to work tonight. i'm ok with some of the linework, but overall it's just missing something. the proportions are wanky too and it just doesn't feel right. i definitely didn't get into any kind of groove. altho not super happy, i feel a little better since i overheard a few other people in class saying they were struggling for some reason too. i think it may have been the lighting setup. it defined the forms funny. there's always next week.

figure sezzion

figure drawing went really great tonight. my warmups were a little rough, and i was starting to get nervous. i thought my whole night would be rought. but my last two warmups felt really good and i captures some good gestures.

so moved into the final extended pose. i think to date it's probably my favorite figure drawing. i think it has the weight and dimension that a lot of my other drawings are missing. a few things are off like the pole, but i'm ok with it as a study. it's really only an about an hour and 15 min or so, so i'm pretty happy with what i captured.

i also started this small oil painting of a cemetary and a large tree. it's real quick and dirty so far, but i'm enjoying it. i have set expectations for it other than to have fun and work a little value. i'll probably never push it passed this umber palette. so far, oils are incredibly fun and i LOVE going into a little painting with no preparation or expectation. it's just fun and if it turns out like crap, it doesn't matter. just let it dry and paint over it!

i'm having a ball.

een prog

first thing, iron man was awesome. i really loved it. the writing was nowhere NEAR the cheesy writing of most other superhero movies, and robert downey jr was perfect for the part. he played it great, the style of the film was awesome, the writing was nice, and iron man was just badass! perfectly done! i was very very pleased.

second, here is a work in progress sketch. it's rough and i have some things to deal with before i get to inking. i'm going to print this image and then do a final line drawing over it with a light table. clean up my lines and make some real decisions. i like it so far. we'll see where it goes.

i have drawing tomorrow night which is great. i'll get my study on, and hopefully do a decent drawing.
